Creating and using a displacement map
by Bree

This exercise will create the patriotic kiss using the flag and kiss files:

Download the files here.

  1. First open the kiss.jpg file and the flag.jpg files.
  2. Using the move tool, drag the flag onto the kiss.
  3. Resize the flag so it just covers the kiss.
  4. Turn off visibility on the flag layer.
  5. Click on the kiss layer.
  6. Click on the "Channels" tab.
  7. Press contol and double click on the RGB layer
  8. Now click on the "Save Selection as channel" button at the bottom of the palette
  9. Click on the "Alpha 1" channel. Deselect. (You could at this point smooth out the results a bit using Filter -->Blur-->Gaussian Blur and you could increase the contrast between light and dark using Image-->adjust--->Levels but this particular channel looks pretty good to me so I'm not changing anything). blur-->gaussian blur and you could increase the contrast between light and dark using image-->adjust--->levels but this particular channel looks pretty good to me so i'm not changing anything). > gaussian blur and you could increase the contrast between light and dark using image-->adjust--->levels but this particular channel looks pretty good to me so i'm not changing anything). > >
  10. Click on the arrow at the top right of the palette for the pop out menu and choose "Duplicate Channel."
  11. In the Duplicate channel dialog box, the destination should be "new" and then Name it "kissdis"
  12. Save the new file as "kissdis.psd" and close it.
  13. Go back to the kiss/flag layers.
  14. Make the flag layer visible and make that the active layer.
  15. Now go Filter-->Distort--->Displace the settings should be 10-10 % Click on OK. Then choose the kissdis.psd file and Open. distort--->displace the settings should be 10-10 % click on ok. then choose the kissdis.psd file and open. > displace the settings should be 10-10 % click on ok. then choose the kissdis.psd file and open. > >
  16. Turn down the opacity on the flag layer.
  17. Click on the kiss layer. Use the magic wand (tolerance = 0) and click in the white layer. Click on the flag layer and hit the delete key. Deselect.
  18. Use the eraser tool to clean up :)
  19. Optimize and save.
You can add a flag to just about anything!!! :)

Hey, are you ready to get into something new? Are you ready to try a Thumbnail Gallery (or just Gallery)? What's a Gallery? Typically a Gallery is a simple webpage with 5-30 thumbnails, or mini versions of images, which when clicked lead to a full size version of the desired image.
