The perfect webmaster, is there such a thing? - Article by SleazyBear
The perfect webmaster is there such a thing? I have been in this business for what seems like forever. This business can take its toll on your body, your relationship, and your mind and thats just a start. There is as many negatives as there is positives, for the ones of us that have been in this business since the beginning we have seen many of our friends come and go. One of the hardest things is keeping burnout under control. You sit for hour and hours with your head stuck in a computer monitor looking at people that are naked and doing some of the weirdest stuff you have ever seen. You grow completely immune to it. It goes from wow look at the tits on that, to hmmm the pixels are a little stretched on that image. So how do you become the perfect webmaster, well lets make a list and go from there.
For one set up a time your going to work, every day work at that time, one note though its a lot easy to work, when the house is quiet.Make a to do list, there are so many ways to make money in this business that its hard to work at all of them, the best way is to work on what makes you money, when you have this done, just do the same thing over and over. Weekly try something new, either a different niche or maybe even a different strategy, do something different, if you do say blogs every day, but you don't do a free site, do a free site, just do something a little different, even if its for your blog to link to.
Music, I find music to be a mind soothing, I have kiss, ac/dc, or some other hardcore band blasting in my ears, most of the time. It gives me rhythm in my work and helps make the time go by a lot easier. Set a timer, For every 45 minutes you work, get up walk around, look at something different, think. Very important to think. The main point is get up out of the chair.Projects we all have all these projects we want to do, but some never seem to get done, we will buy the domain, get the content, then the domain just sits there, oops. Keep projects in order in a note pad, that way when you feel like doing something different, then go back and work on one of the projects on your list. The best way to start a project is to write it down and keep it to yourself. You will never get all the projects you come up with done, but it will give you a break from what you have been doing. Family and friends the most import thing to a perfect webmaster, because after the money is spent, after all your hard work is done for the day, there they are. Take time for them, the net and your work will always be there. Take that some hard earned cash and go out and do something, even if its just a weekend trip in a motel in the next town from you, and leave the laptop at home.
Make sure you do backups, many have lost years worth of work, when a hard drive goes belly up, and they will, no matter who built it, or what model you have its going to bite the dust. Try to have some kind of organization on your desk, keep the trash off of it. If you smoke set a timer for when you light your next smoke, I once worked 24 hours solid, busting my butt on a special project, didn't pay attention and smoked almost 5 packs of smokes. Most of them just burnt up in the ashtray, but still pay attention to how much your smoking.
Burnout this will get you, one day your going to say, I am so tired of doing this, day in day out, it will bite you when you least expect it, but it will bite you. Doing this for so long I suffer from burnout all the time. I get away from it, I just walk away. I may not turn a computer for a day or two, I take the dog for a walk, watch a couple of movies, then I am back to it. We all need to take a break from time to time, so when you feel like its just pushing and pushing you, walk away for a day or two, do something you enjoy, going to the pub and tyeing one on isn't a good thing for burn out, it just makes you feel worse the next day. Just do somethings you enjoy, the key thing is to get away.
I am sure I left out something, and someone will call me on it, but to be honest there is no such thing as a perfect webmaster, but if you take some of the things I have mentioned you will find it makes your work a lot easy, and your life a lot simpler.
