When do I need a Server
by Sexco
If you plan on owning multiple websites, a good starting point would be to invest in a server. Server hardware is similar to that of a desktop computer, with the exception that you will want to have a faster processor, more Ram and a High-Speed Fiber Connection to connect the machine to the Internet. Normally servers are located within an Internet Web Hosting Company. You can lease them or collocate a server you may already own.
Most web hosting companies offer servers that are managed. This is where the web hosting company will service the machine on a regular basis to make sure it is running smoothly and secure. Typically a standard server can host up to 100 small to medium size websites and handle up to two or three Megs sustained or over 700Gb of monthly bandwidth traffic without encountering any problems.
A Server can be in a tower style computer case or a slim U rack mount case. Often they use the same hardware. The basics of the machine are a processor, ram and hard drive space. There are different operating software's such as Linux, Microsoft and Free BSD. Brand name servers can offer sleek designs with proprietary hardware. However, using a clone server with the same hardware specs will achieve the same output at a lower price. A key benefit with a tower style case is the ability to add more hardware. Tower style cases are significantly lower in cost compared to a rack mount case.
From this point you will either lease the server from your web hosting company or choose to purchase one and collocate in their Data Center. With larger web hosting companies you might find it more economical to rent the server, which can offer, month to month contracts and little cash output. Compared to a higher cost when you purchase the hardware and configure it.
A reliable server will be any name brand processor with a minimum of 800Mhz and 256Megs of Ram. A fast spinning 7200RPM hard drive is going to perform better then a 5400-RPM hard drive. The size of the hard drive will depend on your storage needs. In today's market, a 20GB 7200 RPM is a good starting point.
However you decide which server is best for you, there are endless amounts of benefits in having your own server. From streaming broadband video, to automated scripts that make your website work for you.
The reliability is second to none, since you are not sharing the server with any of the web hosting company's clients. Therefore reducing the risk of another website crashing the server unexpectedly and causing you downtime.
